Pangkep, 14th of May 2026, Capture Fisheries Study Program, in collaboration with the Marine and Fisheries Service of Pangkep Regency, conducted the preliminary discussion on the Blue Swimming Crab Conservation Area at the Official Residence of the Regent of Pangkajene and Kepulauan. The activity was organized as a form of synergy between local government and academia in supporting the sustainable management of blue swimming crab resources in the coastal waters of Pangkep Regency. The event also received full support from the Regent of Pangkep Regency, Dr. H. Muhammad Yusran Lalogau, S.Pi., M.Si.
The exposition material was presented by Ir. M. Abduh Ibnu Hajar, S.Pi., M.Si., who explained the initial concept for the development of a blue swimming crab conservation area as an effort to control exploitation pressure and maintain the sustainability of crab stocks in the coastal waters of Pangkep Regency. During the presentation, it was emphasized that the establishment of the conservation area is expected to become a strategic step in supporting the natural regeneration process of blue swimming crab populations, increasing public awareness regarding the importance of conservation, and sustaining the economic livelihoods of fishers who depend on blue swimming crab resources.
The activity proceeded smoothly and interactively through a discussion session involving various stakeholders. Participants included blue swimming crab fishers, fisheries business actors, fisheries extension officers, representatives of the local government, and academics who provided valuable input regarding the management of conservation areas in the coastal region of Pangkep Regency.
In his remarks, the Regent of Pangkep Regency expressed appreciation for the collaborative initiative between the Capture Fisheries Study Program and the Marine and Fisheries Service of Pangkep Regency in promoting blue swimming crab conservation efforts. According to him, the commitment to preserving blue swimming crab resources is not only important from an environmental perspective, but also has significant economic benefits for fishing communities in Pangkep Regency.
“Blue swimming crab is one of the most important commodities for coastal communities in Pangkep Regency. Therefore, we must have a shared commitment to preserving these resources in a sustainable manner. If these resources are properly maintained, they will provide positive economic impacts and improve the welfare of fishers,” said Dr. H. Muhammad Yusran Lalogau, S.Pi., M.Si.
Through this activity, the Capture Fisheries Study Program of Hasanuddin University and the Fisheries Service of Pangkep Regency hope to strengthen sustainable collaboration in supporting conservation-based blue swimming crab resource management that promotes the sustainability of coastal resources and the welfare of fishing communities.
