The Fishing Technology course of the Capture Fisheries Study Program, Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries, Hasanuddin University conducted a field practice activity for students on Friday (5/6/2026) at the Nusantara Fishing Port (PPN) Untia, Makassar. This activity was organized as part of the teaching and learning process under the supervision of the course lecturers of Fishing Technology, namely Muhammad Kurnia, S.Pi., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dr. Ir. Rachmat Hidayat, S.Pi., M.Si., M. Abduh Ibnu Hajar, S.Pi., M.Si., Ph.D., and Prof. Safruddin, S.Pi., M.P., Ph.D. The field practice was attended by students enrolled in the Fishing Technology course as an effort to strengthen their theoretical understanding through direct field observation. One of the main activities during the field practice was a visit to the Unhas Explorer research vessel docked at PPN Untia. Through this visit, students had the opportunity to directly observe the vessel’s specifications, research facilities, and various equipment used in marine and fisheries exploration and survey activities. During the activity, students were introduced to the functions of the research vessel in supporting marine and fisheries research. They also gained insights into the vessel’s operational aspects, including navigation systems, working decks, control rooms, and scientific equipment used for marine data collection and surveys.

This field practice served as an important learning platform for students to connect classroom theories with real-world applications. By directly observing the technologies used in fisheries operations and research activities, students gained a more comprehensive understanding of technological developments in the capture fisheries sector. The lecturers emphasized that field practice is an integral part of the learning process designed to enhance student competencies through hands-on experience. Such activities are expected to broaden students’ knowledge of fishing technology, fisheries infrastructure, and various supporting aspects of sustainable fisheries resource management.

The enthusiastic participation of students throughout the activity, particularly during the vessel introduction and discussion sessions, reflected their strong interest in fisheries technology and marine research applications. Through this activity, students are expected not only to gain practical knowledge but also to strengthen their academic and professional capacity in the field of capture fisheries. This field practice at PPN Untia represents the commitment of the Capture Fisheries Study Program, FIKP Hasanuddin University, to providing applied, relevant, and experience-based learning aligned with the needs of modern fisheries development.
