Barru, 27th April 2025 – A total of 90 students from the Capture Fisheries Study Program at Hasanuddin University carried out an Integrated Field Practice in Dusun Mate’ne, Tanete Village, Tanete Rilau District, Barru Regency, from Friday to Sunday, April 25–27, 2025. This field practice is part of the students’ skills development program, linked to three main courses: Shallow Sea Fishing Ground Areas, Fishing Technology, and Environmentally Friendly Fishing Practices. Through this activity, students are expected to integrate theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom with direct field practice, particularly in understanding real-world fishing ground conditions, the technology utilized, and the application of sustainable fishing methods.

The activity was supervised by 14 lecturers from the Capture Fisheries Study Program, including the Head of Fisheries Resource Utilization Study Program, Dr. Ir. Alfa Nelwan, S.Pi., M.Sc. In addition, the Dean of the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Sciences, Prof. Safruddin, S.Pi., M.Pi., Ph.D., was also present, providing full support for conducting this integrated field practice. The presence of the faculty leadership and supervising lecturers was expected to strengthen the field learning process and provide direct technical and academic guidance to the students.“This integrated field practice is one of the efforts to equip students with practical and analytical competencies, as well as an understanding of the importance of implementing environmentally friendly technologies in the fisheries sector,“ stated Dr. Ir. Alfa Nelwan, S.Pi., M.Sc., head of the Fisheries Resource Utilization Study Program.

Throughout the three-day activity, students engaged in various practices, including observing fishing ground characteristics, practicing the use of both traditional and modern fishing gear, and participating in discussions on innovations in environmentally friendly fishing technologies. The enthusiasm of the participants was evident throughout the program, reflecting their spirit in preparing themselves to become competent human resources in the field of capture fisheries. This field practice activity also strengthened the bonds between students, lecturers, and the local coastal community, who shared their experiences and insights regarding local fishing practices.
