On July 23, 2023, the Fisheries Resources Utilization Study Program of Hasanuddin University (Unhas) organized a community service activity in Aeng Batu-Batu Village, North Galesong District, Takalar Regency. The event aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of local fishermen in sustainable measured fishing practices, while also promoting the importance of conserving fisheries resources. The community service featured two main speakers, Prof. Najamuddin and Dr. Assir Marimba, both lecturers in the Fisheries Resources Utilization Study Program. The session was moderated by Ilham Jaya, MM, who also serves as a teaching staff member in the same program.

The materials presented focused on measured fishing, designed to assist fishermen in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems and ensuring the sustainability of fish stocks in the future. The speakers explained efficient and environmentally friendly fishing techniques and methods, including using appropriate fishing gear and proper time management for fishing. Local fishermen and the community warmly received the event. They felt empowered by the new knowledge of the importance of maintaining the sustainability of marine resources, which directly impacts their livelihood as fishermen.

In his presentation, Prof. Najamuddin stated, “Measured fishing is crucial to prevent the depletion of fish stocks in our waters. By applying the correct techniques, fishermen can continue fishing without harming the balance of the marine ecosystem.” Dr. Assir Marimba added, “Fishermen need to understand the right time to catch fish and the types of fishing gear that are environmentally friendly. This way, the sustainability of fisheries in this area will remain intact.”

The community service concluded with a Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to ask the speakers directly about the challenges they face in their daily fishing practices. The fishermen enthusiastically engaged in discussions and committed to applying the knowledge they gained during the event. This activity is part of Hasanuddin University’s efforts to support the sustainability of fisheries resources and empower coastal communities, particularly in the North Galesong region.
